What is Imbolc?

Watch the Ritual on Facebook.

Imbolc is the first welcoming of the transition from winter into spring. It is known as the celebration of the first light of the year when we welcome the sun's return. It is also the first of the four fire festivals. This is the perfect time for us to start our spring cleaning, start our seeds for our gardens (depending on your growing zone), and letting the growing light start our internal growth from out of our shadows. Imbolc is also a time to let go of the past and look to the future. We make space for growth and new beginnings.

Here is a small Imbolc ritual for you to welcome the light of the sun back into your life.

Items:

  • One small candle – white, red, or yellow

  • Three bay leaves

  • Salt (about ¼ to ½ cup)

  • One fire safe dish large enough to hold the salt, candle, and bay leaves.

  • Representation of the elements (Images provided below)

  • Lighter or matches

Optional Items:

  • Incense or essential oils of your choice – Such as Frankincense, myrrh, lavender, rosemary, or any other incense you wish for your working.

  • Crystals of your choice – Carnelian, Moonstone, Amethyst, Chrysocolla, Malachite, Calcite, or Clear Quartz.

  • Early flowers that have grown up – Daffodils, Snowdrop, Iris

  • Blackberries, or homemade bread

  • Seeds you wish to bless to grow in your garden

Prepare your altar:

You can have physical representations of the elements if you wish such as incense for air, a candle for fire, a bowl of water for water, a flower or some dirt from the earth, and if you are representing spirit use whatever representation of spirit works for you. If you do not wish to use any of these things you can see the diagram below, draw each of the symbols on a small piece of paper and place them in their appropriate place.

Fill your fire-safe dish with the salt, place your candle in the salt, and position the bay leaves behind them in an upright position as if they were growing out of the salt. Place this in the center of your altar.

Feel free to arrange your optional items around the altar in whatever way feels correct to you.

Begin the Ritual:

Focus your energies on the symbol of fire and say:

As the sun's rays return to us we welcome the element of Fire to bless this ritual and work and to spark life and growth in all aspects of it. Hail and Welcome.

Focus your energies on the symbol of earth and say:

As nature stirs in the womb of the earth we welcome the element of Earth to bless this ritual and work as we open ourselves to new beginnings. Hail and Welcome.

Focus your energies on the symbol of water and say:

Water is one of the universal life forces and we welcome the element of water to bless this ritual and work as we allow the nourishing fluidity of the universe to work within us. Hail and Welcome.

Focus your energies on the symbol of air and say:

As we take a deep breath in and fill our lungs with balance and grace we welcome the element of Air to bless this ritual and work and breathe life into all we wish to manifest. Hail and Welcome.

If you work with the element of spirit focus your energies on the symbol and say:

Our spirit connects us to everything we interact with, we welcome the element of Spirit to bless this ritual and work and to connect us deeply to our work and each other.

Light the main candle on your altar and say:

As the cold has begun to fade away with the fleeting darkness, we celebrate Imbolc. We celebrate the life returning to the world from the womb of the earth. We celebrate the light and warmth of the sun's sacred return. We call to the Mother for blessings of growth, prosperity, and abundance in home and health. This is a time of rebirth, regeneration, and fertility. We will new life into our manifestations and nurture them warmly to their fullest potential. May our lights burn bright on this first night of this first celebration of fire.

If you have any other requests or workings to do now is the time.

If not we will begin to release the elements.

Closing the Ritual:

Focus your energies on the element of Spirit and say:

To the element of Spirit, I thank you for your blessings and aid during these workings. I release you in peace. Thank you and Farewell.

Focus your energies on the element of Air and say:

To the element of Air, I thank you for your blessings and aid during these workings. I release you in peace. Thank you and Farewell.

Focus your energies on the element of Water and say:

To the element of Water, I thank you for your blessings and aid during these workings. I release you in peace. Thank you and Farewell.

Focus your energies on the element of Earth and say:

To the element of Earth, I thank you for your blessings and aid during these workings. I release you in peace. Thank you and Farewell.

Focus your energies on the element of Fire and say:

To the element of Fire, I thank you for your blessings and aid during these workings. I release you in peace. Thank you and Farewell.

Finally, close out your ritual by focusing on your work and sending it out to manifest and say:

So mote it be.

Let your candle burn down until it goes out on its own.

Dispose of all the natural ingredients outside by returning them to the earth. Dispose of all the unnatural ingredients by recycling or proper disposal.
